Marine Heritage Society

We would like to thank our dedicated volunteers for contributing about 3000 hours of their time. This has allowed us to accomplish both large and small tasks over the past year, inside the ship, around the tugs, and in the park.
We also send a grateful thank you to the companies who have offered their time and expertise, and donated goods, to the various projects completed over the year, including Home Hardware.
The yard around the tugs has had work done. Not finished yet, but looking better.
  •  the ground has been levelled,
  •  more rip rap was put in place,
  •  a ramp to board the CN Tug was set in.
The dredge shed has had work done;
  • a new skirt of stucco to prevent weathering of the boards from sun and water
  • deteriorating supports have been replaced
  •  the inside is being insulated so work can take place all winter.
The City has added a few plants to landscape the north side of the ship.
On the ship itself;
  •  areas of deteriorating paint have been refreshed
  •  new trim has been placed around the edge of the decks to deter leaks.
  •  degraded support posts have been replaced.
  •  displays have been added to
  • QR codes have been placed to give visitors an opportunity to learn more than we have space to explain about Valley history.
 Most of the weddings and events booked for the 2021 season had to be cancelled, but a few, very small, private events that fit within the COVID guidelines were held. Thank you to everyone for the extra work cleaning afterwards, and thanks for choosing the Sicamous. We’ve also had photo opportunities taking place, and the ship will be featured in some new tourist advertising ( Expedia and Travel Penticton). A documentary film crew was here gathering KVR information, and the film "Drinkwater" (scenes were filmed onboard last year) is now complete.  But… most of the year was spent doing required maintenance. A few of the photos are included below.

Yes, this newsletter is full of well deserved “thanks” - we fully appreciate the extra mile everyone has gone to help us through the second year of this process. Once again the Cannery Brewing has donated a portion of their sales of the LakeBoat Lager to the S.S. Sicamous. We also had the local group of the  Friendship Force make a donation to the Society.

When the local chapter of the Legion closed its doors they were in possession of a rather large anchor, set up on the property, that had to be moved. After some discussion, it was agreed that it could be moved to the Heritage Park near the rear of the ship. It is an anchor that commemorates the Canadians who fought with American Naval troops. It should be set in place  here soon.

As a means of raising funds, our Vice President Matt Verboeket, has offered to craft a table as a thank you gift for any person making a donation of $150 dollars or more. Sample photos of your choices are below. We will make a more formal announcement soon. Stay tuned!

There have been a few changes on the Board of Directors this year. A huge thank you to Adolf Steffen, Sue Darnell, and Murray Grandy, and Rick Johnson who have given the Society many years of their assistance and expertise, helping to bring us to where we are now.  It is appreciated. We are hoping they will still drop in when they can.

A heartfelt welcome to the new members, Jessie Laven, Mike Bews, Glen Jacobson, Carole Dumestre, and Jim Rice, who already have a history of contribution to the Society. We look forward to your ideas and experience to move the Society forward in the coming years.

Looking forward to welcoming the public back on to the ship next year if all goes well.
